About Dr Scott McCowan
Kia ora,
Welcome to my website. My name is Scott and I am an American-born and trained urologist who has made the Lower North Island my home. Prior to moving to New Zealand with my family in 2020, I worked for a decade in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, where I was known for my work with women in particular. I was born in Kentucky, studied at Princeton, and, after a brief stint teaching high school, completed medical school and my urology training at Emory University.
I’m certified by the American Board of Urology and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. I currently lead the Urology Department at Palmerston North Hospital, and consult and operate privately from Crest Specialist Centre in Palmerston North and Selena Sutherland Hospital in Masterton.
I also hold specific credentials in vaginal prolapse repair, and I’m currently the only privately practising urologist in the region with this credential working alongside gynaecology.
He is certified by the American Board of Urology and holds equivalency certification with Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

How I work with patients
Urology can be a sensitive topic, and these conversations can feel uncomfortable because it’s not something people really talk about. If you’ve been referred to me, or you’re wondering if you should be, I’m here to help.
Every consultation starts with a detailed conversation about your health and what’s concerning you. I’ll walk you through your options, so you understand what’s involved and why, and we’ll decide on the best path forward together. Support people are welcome, but we can also make sure that you have time and space to talk about more sensitive topics on your own if you prefer.
If you decide to move ahead with surgical treatment, I’ll stay in touch after your surgery to make sure you’re recovering well.
Whether you’re a new patient or coming back to see me, I’ll make it as comfortable as I can – the team and I are here to support you every step of the way.
